Why Lead Flashing Fails

Lead has an unusually high coefficient of thermal expansion — it moves significantly more with temperature change than most building materials. A lead flashing on a south-facing Coventry chimney might reach 60–70°C in summer and drop to −5°C in winter — a 75° range that creates constant movement at every fold, edge and fixing point.
