Coventry Trading Standards receive complaints about rogue roofing traders every year, with peaks after significant storm events. The tactics are consistent and the outcomes are expensive: substandard work that fails within months, work invoiced but not carried out, and in the worst cases, full payment taken with no work done at all. This guide gives you the tools to identify bad actors before they get access to your property or your wallet.
The Classic Red Flags
1. They Knocked on Your Door Uninvited
Legitimate roofing companies do not cold-call or door-knock. We do not knock on doors claiming to have noticed damage while working nearby. If anyone does this after a storm or at any other time, the correct response is to decline politely and contact a roofer you have identified independently.
The "working nearby" line is a stock phrase. It requires no proof and establishes a fake local credibility. It is used by rogue traders across the UK roofing sector and is one of the most reliable indicators that the person at your door is not operating legitimately.
2. They Want Cash, Upfront, Today
A large cash payment demanded before work starts — or before a written quote has been provided — is the single most consistent red flag across all rogue trader complaints. Legitimate roofers accept bank transfer, card and sometimes cheque. They provide receipts and invoices. They do not need cash to avoid a paper trail.
A reasonable deposit for materials (25–30%) is legitimate. Full payment before work starts is not. If you are being pressured for immediate cash payment, end the conversation.
3. There Is No Written Quote
Any roofing job over £200 should have a written quote that specifies what work will be done, what materials will be used, what the total cost is, and what the payment terms are. A verbal quote, a price "off the top of my head" or a number written on a scrap of paper is not a contract and gives you no protection if the work is not carried out or is substandard.
The test: Ask the roofer to email you a written, itemised quote before you agree to anything. A legitimate roofer will do this without hesitation. A rogue trader will find reasons why that is not possible or will become evasive.
4. They Create Urgency Where None Exists
Pressure to make an immediate decision — "I can only do it at this price today", "I have a cancellation this afternoon", "the damage will get much worse if you don't act now" — is a sales technique designed to prevent you from verifying credentials or getting alternative quotes. Genuine roofing problems do not require same-day decisions. Any roofer who requires you to commit without time to check them out is not a roofer you should use.
Trading Standards receive elevated complaints about rogue roofing traders after major storms, when door-to-door canvassing peaks.
